"The goal is for Open Energy to be a standard, within the public and private sector, for the use of open data with a value of co-creation," says Chile's National Energy Commission (CNE), which has created a web page with the same name as the global trend.

Open Energy seeks to address a wide variety of interests and needs associated with the energy sector, focusing on reducing information asymmetries, increasing transparency, and fostering citizen participation through innovative solutions. In this way, key players in the energy sector could share key data that, in turn, could be used by private or public companies to develop solutions that help achieve environmental and social sustainability.

In Mexico alone, the Ministry of Energy (SENER) has created the Energy Information System (SIE) that gathers information in a database fed by the companies, commissions, and institutes that form the energy sector in the country.

A clear example of this is the North American electricity industry, which is made up of more than 3,300 public, private, and cooperative companies in charge of energy production, transportation, distribution, and marketing.
